4 months

{vee & deb}

despite being
under the weather,
vee has been
quite busy
enjoying her
mexico adventure.

last week
her aunties
deb & maria
arrived
from
north carolina
and have
been doting
on her ever since.

{vee & maria}

they have been
helping out
by taking care
of vee
while
grub helps me
work in the field...
or just letting us
have a date night
on our
monthly
anniversary.
they have also
been taking her
for toe-dipping
in the sea
and sunset watching.
what nice
aunties
they are!

21jan_debvee

we have had
a wonderful time
having them
around.

. . . . .

last week
we all went
to see
the baby
sea turtles
and
release them into the sea.
they have
a conservation project
to protect
the sea turtles
that come on the beach
to lay there eggs.
they are endangered
and
the group
that does
the turtle
conservation
is associated
with the
university of umar
(the same university
that is our
collaborator
in our
beetle/lima bean project).

although
we tried
to expose her
to some biology in action,
she chose to sleep instead.

21jan_veeturtle

i know that
by dragging her
to all these
biological adventures,
i am sure to cement
her desire for a career
in anything BUT
the biological science.
sigh.

. . . . .

21jan_beachdrinks

vee has been
accompanying us
on many excursions
to restaurants
and
sunset-watching/
margarita-drinking
evenings.
we just put her
on the table
and usually
she is happy
as can be.
there are the
occasional
melt-downs
but that's
par for the course.

vee celebrated
her 4 month
birthday
on the 18th.
since it was
close to
deb's birthday,
they had
a joint party.
we invited
all the guests
and workers
at the place
we are celebrating
to cake by the pool.
it was quite
festive.
aunt maria
bought
them both
wonderful
cakes from
the mercado!

. . . . .

vee has
been developing
a number of skills
since she arrived.
she offically grabs
everything
and shoves most
of it into her mouth.
also
she can now
roll over and straighten
out her arms
(baby push-ups).
this is making it
ever more impossible
for
the aforementioned
putting her on
tables at restaurants
set-up.
we have to keep
a careful eye on her.

she kicks like
crazy when
she is on her stomach
so i think
she will be a good swimmer.
i plan to get her
in the water soon.

21_veeandmee

otherwise
we are trying
to make things work
and enjoy
mexico
as much as
we can...
i am sure
we will be pining away
for the warm weather
and beaches
when
we are back
in the cold
winter
of switzerland
in a little
more than a week!

for all the sweet
comments & emails
about my last post.
i can't express
how much i appreciate it.

  4. i'm just catching up!

So. Speaking as a former infant who's parents bundled her (and eventually her sister)up just a few weeks after birth and began a six year travel-round-the-world sort of deal, I will say that my life is so much better for it. Even if they accidentally left me on a train in Germany. And my sister in a field in India. (And even though I can't remember most of it.)

(My mom and dad both still tell stories about the advice/disapproval/helpfulness of people in different countries. They were young and probably a little too bold and laughed most of it off.)

Also: your body is an amazing thing and will do its thing with the milk and sweet Vee will be great and thrive. And if it doesn't-- you are in great company, lady. So, so many mothers struggle with making milk in spite of heroic efforts. Be gentle with yourself.
