18 months

18_3358

t h e    m o n t h    o f    w o r d s

it started
in early february
with the word
"hot"
as i was warning
her about
touching
the red lever
on the water cooler
outside
in the palapa...

soon
she began
to repeat
many words
we said to her
and
she clearly
understood
what they meant.

hot
light
bubbles
book
agua
aretes
chat
hop
cheese
please
all done
c'est tout

i find it
interesting
that
as her speech
develops
she often
babbles-
a nonsensical
string of
unintelligible
words
that
we
associate
with toddlers.
i realize
that she
is trying out
new sounds.
recognisable words
can be heard
among the babble.

sometimes
the sounds
are mostly
french,
sometimes
the sounds
are clearly
english.

she clearly
prefers words
in certain languages
over others.

aqua, not water
light, not lumière
chat, not cat or kitty

an accumulation
of words
in the language
of valérie.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

this month
we left
sunny
mexico...

18_3413

18_3412

18_3189

18_3228

18_3095

and headed to
the northwest...

18_3414

via texas...

18_3424
23feb.

and stayed
in
rainy
seattle
for a few weeks...

with
grub's clan,
grandma & grandpa...

18_3428

18_3429

18_3501

where
vee was
obsessed
with
le chat.

kitty

then
visiting friends...

18_3458 18_3446

and
ending up
with
the bugheart clan...

18_2777

18_2739

including
a special visit
from her
great aunts
(tante omas)!

18_2812

but
vee had
eyes only
for
le chien.

"charlie"
(the dog's name)
was her favorite
word to say.

18_2745

then
we
finally
headed
home.
to
cold
switzerland.

home in switzerland again...

it seemed
like
a very long
month.

we were
exhausted.

and
another
month had
gone by...

tante oma elsa

elsa8877

i am finding
it more difficult
to keep up
with all the events
in little vee's life
but
i am determined...
so forgive me
if i am falling behind.
i will
get to it.
as my brother tom
wrote in his last postcard-
our family motto
should be
better late than never.

. . . . .

i wanted to do
a special post
to document
vee meeting
my aunt elsa
and uncle brian.
these two people
were ever present
in my life
growing up,
especially
my aunt elsa.

when
i told my two aunts,
elsa and ella,
that i was having a baby
i said that
they deserved special names
to reflect
their importance
in little vee's life...
more than just aunts
but like aunt / grandma...
so i call them
her
tante omas.

. . . . .

elsa8798

so vee met
tante oma elsa
just before her
8 month birthday.

brian and elsa
came to see the sights...

elsa8830

but of course
the most
exciting sight
was
wee vee.

elsa8811

vee celebrated her 8 month birthday
with elsa and brian...
and elsa gave vee
her new favorite book...
louloup!

elsa8840

thank you tante oma!!!

and
tante oma
is a very stylish lady
so vee had to put
on her best to
go out with her
(peacoat from omi).

elsa8928

but mostly
we spent a lot
of time
enjoying
being with family...

elsa8875

although
our experiences
living in switzerland
have been amazing
and
will cherish our years
here for
the rest of our lives
it is,
of course,
bittersweet
as vee misses
getting to know
all her family
and they miss seeing
this amazing little person
grow...

elsa8922

visits from
family
are wonderful
but
it makes
the distance
seem greater
and the sting
of missing them
a little
more
poignant.

we miss you.
