growing up
with
a german mother,
i had always
heard about
st. nicholas day.
on the evening
of
the 5th
of december
(the 4th
in some places)
you put your shoes
{that you
carefully
clean & shine}
outside the
front door.
if you have been
good,
polite, & helpful
st. nicholas
will fill
your shoes
with candy
and/or
gifts.
we figured
since
we now
lived in europe
we'd see
if st. nicholas
would pay us
a visit.
we were skeptical
and
not sure
we had been
good,
polite, & helpful
{vee was
of course
all three}.
my dutch friend,
annemarie,
told me
the best thing
to do
is leave
a carrot
in your shoe
for st. nicholas'
white horse...
but
we did not
have a carrot
on hand
and
didn't know
if his horse liked
kohlrabi.
. . . . .
sure enough
the next
morning
we were
all
quite surprised!
{please excuse the blurriness, it was early}
st. nicholas
had stopped by!
he hadn't quite
filled
our shoes
but
i guess
we
hadn't
been that
good.
hooray for st. nicholas!
