dose of reality #3

waiting

strabismus [strəˈbɪzməs]
n. Strabismus is a condition in which the eyes do not point in
the same direction. It can also be referred to as a tropia or
squint.

i didn't
know
what that
word meant
until
december 23rd.
the day
grub and i
took vee
to
an ophthalmologist.

crazydoctor

within
5 minutes
of the doctor
examining vee,
she said that
vee would
never see normally.
vee would
need surgery.
grub said
it felt like
being
punched in the gut.
it did.
i remember
the first thing
that i thought
when she said that
was
now she can never be
a pilot
.
why would i care
about that?

. . . . .

i noticed
that
vee's eyes
had a tendency
to go
cross-eyed.
many of you
probably
noticed it too.
i worried
but
hoped that
that
it would pass.
hoped i was
overreacting.
as the months
progressed
i worried
more and more.
when
our pediatrician
called,
out of the blue,
and said
maybe we should
go see an
ophthalmologist
before we left
to mexico
i couldn't help
but wonder
if he worried about
the same thing.

before christmas
we went
to the doctor
that we now call
that crazy doctor,
not because her
prognosis was wrong
but because
she had
no bedside manner,
offered little hope
and
outdated
treatments
to fix
vee's eye problem.

after
we saw her
grub and i
could think
and talk
of nothing else.
we worried
and fretted.
i blamed myself.
perhaps
my bad genes
or
my traumatic labor
was the cause.

i started
to be shy
about posting
photos of her
when her
eyes looked
crossed.
especially
when people
close to me
made a comment
about
not liking
my favorite photo
of vee

i took
for
our christmas card
because
her eyes
were crossed.

swissmiss

the rational side
of me
thought
that this was
a small problem
in the great
scheme of things.
but the mother in me
dreaded
that people would
judge her,
think less of her...
that people would
see photos of her
and
just notice her eyes
instead of her.
stupid,
i know.

stabismus_veegreen

i found myself
staring at her eyes,
searching
for a glimmer
of improvement...
looking at other babies
with their
perfectly-centered eyes
with jealousy.

i hated myself
for thoughts like that.

vee was still vee.
nothing had changed.
i reminded myself
of my dear friend
who wore braces on her legs
throughout
her childhood
and then grew up to be
an amazing
professional dancer.

i remembered
the last chapter
in the book
Bad Mother,
that my friend sent me
(a book all
new mothers
should read).
the author talks
about her own struggles
with her son's problems:

The most toxic thing parents can do is allow their delight and pride in their children to be spoiled by disappointment, by frustration when the children fail to live up to expectations formed before they were even born, expectations that have nothing to do with them and everything to do with the parents' own egos.

. . . . .

so we did what
most parents
would do...
we sought
a second opinion.

yesterday
we went
to the big hospital
in nearby lausanne
that specializes in
eye problems.

the chief medicine
specializes in
strabismus.
i was scared.
he looked mean
in his photo.

drklainguti

i didn't know
if i could deal
with another
insensitive
swiss doctor.

we headed out
on the train
early in the morning.

stabismus_onthetrain

the hospital was
modern and
the nurses
were helpful.

stabismus_hospital

we had
a much better
experience
this time around.
the staff was
competent,
sensitive,
and answered
the many questions
i asked
in broken french.

stabismus_corridor

they were
impressed with
how
tranquille
vee was
and
repeatedly
called her
a bon bébé.

the doctor
was very kind
and examined
her carefully.
he played with vee
and called her
mignon.

stabismus_docwithvee

he explained
things to us
and prepared us for
the
combattre
{his words}
ahead-
the things
we would need to do
to make sure
both vee's eyes
developed
and
the potential surgery
she may need before
she turns
one year old.

it's still
a scary thought.
but i think
we feel
a little more
prepared.
a little more equipped
to deal
with the road ahead
and help vee
the best we can.

stabismus_veenavystripes

i have learned
to forget
about what
others think
and focus on
just taking care of vee
and
her happiness
and well-being...
to
delight in her
cross-eyed
and all.

The thing to remember, in our quest to do the right by our children and by ourselves, is that while we struggle to conform to an ideal or to achieve a goal, our life is happening around us, without our noticing. If we are too busy or too anxious to pay attention, it will all be gone before we have time to appreciate it.

4 months

21_debandvee
{vee & deb}

despite being
under the weather,
vee has been
quite busy
enjoying her
mexico adventure.

last week
her aunties
deb & maria
arrived
from
north carolina
and have
been doting
on her ever since.

21jan_veemaria
{vee & maria}

they have been
helping out
by taking care
of vee
while
grub helps me
work in the field...
or just letting us
have a date night
on our
monthly
anniversary.
they have also
been taking her
for toe-dipping
in the sea
and sunset watching.
what nice
aunties
they are!

21jan_debvee

we have had
a wonderful time
having them
around.

21jan_thewholegang

. . . . .

last week
we all went
to see
the baby
sea turtles
and
release them into the sea.
they have
a conservation project
to protect
the sea turtles
that come on the beach
to lay there eggs.
they are endangered
and
the group
that does
the turtle
conservation
is associated
with the
university of umar
(the same university
that is our
collaborator
in our
beetle/lima bean project).

sunshine_turtles

although
we tried
to expose her
to some biology in action,
she chose to sleep instead.

21jan_veeturtle

i know that
by dragging her
to all these
biological adventures,
i am sure to cement
her desire for a career
in anything BUT
the biological science.
sigh.

. . . . .

21jan_beachdrinks

vee has been
accompanying us
on many excursions
to restaurants
and
sunset-watching/
margarita-drinking
evenings.
we just put her
on the table
and usually
she is happy
as can be.
there are the
occasional
melt-downs
but that's
par for the course.

. . . . .

21_bdays

vee celebrated
her 4 month
birthday
on the 18th.
since it was
close to
deb's birthday,
they had
a joint party.
we invited
all the guests
and workers
at the place
we are celebrating
to cake by the pool.
it was quite
festive.
aunt maria
bought
them both
wonderful
cakes from
the mercado!

21jan_veegraps

. . . . .

vee has
been developing
a number of skills
since she arrived.
she offically grabs
everything
and shoves most
of it into her mouth.
also
she can now
roll over and straighten
out her arms
(baby push-ups).
this is making it
ever more impossible
for
the aforementioned
putting her on
tables at restaurants
set-up.
we have to keep
a careful eye on her.

she kicks like
crazy when
she is on her stomach
so i think
she will be a good swimmer.
i plan to get her
in the water soon.

21_veeandmee

otherwise
we are trying
to make things work
and enjoy
mexico
as much as
we can...
i am sure
we will be pining away
for the warm weather
and beaches
when
we are back
in the cold
winter
of switzerland
in a little
more than a week!

p.s.
thank you so much
for all the sweet
comments & emails
about my last post.
i can't express
how much i appreciate it.

2 months

vee: 2months

vee passed
the
2 month mark
last week
and i
managed
to snap
a photo.
grub was
tsk tsk-ing
me for
choosing
such a
girlie outfit
for her
photo shoot.
i plan to take
a photo of
her each month
in this chair
like
this person
did:

Eleanor, All Twenty Four Months

vee has been
growing fast
and keeping
busy.

she got
her
first
vaccination
shots
and cried
so fiercely
it
made
her mom cry.

she visited
the osteopath
again.

28nov_osteopath

she can
hold her
head up
pretty well
but still
swings
it back
and forth
like
a bowling ball
out of control.

28nov_headup

she is
always
enamoured
with her dad

28nov_coquistador_vee

but i swear
it's the
conquistador look
that catches
her eye.

she still has
her fair share
of meltdowns.

28nov_meltdown

but is
usually
quite
an
amiable
lady.

amiable

on
thanksgiving day
vee received
all her paperwork
for
U.S. citizenship.

28nov_passport

a very fancy
certificate
of citizenship
for babies
born outside the USA
and
her passport!
what a little
jet-setter
to have
her own passport
at 2 months old!!!
although
she doesn't
appear to
be thrilled
at the idea
of plane-travel.

last
but not least
she
celebrated
her first
thanksgiving

28nov_thanksgiving

(although she
had to eat
her dad's
great cooking
secondhand).

vee got
dressed up
in her
finest
turkey day best

turkey day duds
{thanks eliza for the socks!}

and
our guests
even brought
a special
marzipan/apricot
cake
in her honor.

28nov_pippi
{thanks matthias, dagmar, & linnéa}

the holidays
are fast
approaching
and it looks
like
we will
celebrate
christmas
in
switzerland
and
new years eve
on a plane
to mexico.
we will
let you know
how
that all
shakes out.

but for now.
